First A Naval Guidance System Now Israeli Security Detail Guns Lost in Airport Baggage Hell

Jul 8, 2010 by

We’ve all been there, waiting impatiently at the baggage claim bumping shoulders with others, watching the bags go round. We anxiously await our bags, wondering if they have made it to our destination with us, but sometimes they don’t. Even the highest profile of people are not exempt from lost baggage. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his usual security detail were traveling to the United States on a US Airline; now they did not lose clothes or a laptop but rather a case of Glock 9mm’s.

The PM’s security forces had to check the Glock’s into checked baggage along with the rest of their items, and the Glock’s were placed on a connecting flight, expected to arrive with them in Washington DC. However the Glock’s got mistakenly placed on a flight to LAX, where they went missing. The four Glock’s are now presumed stolen.

Sadly even with all the airport technology in place, they can’t keep an eye on our luggage. The loss of our bag’s is the gamble we all take while flying, and it’s frighteningly common. You’d think losing a case full of handguns was the worst thing, but it’s not even on the top 10 list.

According to the Unclaimed Baggage Center these are the 10 craziest lost baggage items.

  1. Hoggle from “Labyrinth”
  2. A slew of ancient Egyptian artifacts
  3. A rattle snake( true snakes on a plane )
  4. A Naval guidance system, valued at 250,000 dollars
  5. Barbie; stuffed with 500 dollars inside
  6. A full suit of armor
  7. A violin from the 1770s
  8. A 5.8-carat diamond
  9. A camera designed for use on a NASA Space Shuttle
  10. A 40.95-carat natural emerald

This is just the top 10 list, it certainly does not cover the massive amounts of daily items, but it should say enough that they have an entire center devoted to lost luggage items. The Unclaimed Baggage Center takes up an entire city block in Scottsboro, Alabama and is filled with everything from your normal toiletries to; well you saw the list. You and I lose clothes or an expensive electronic, but some people lose everything from guns to space shuttle equipment. So the next time you’re standing at the baggage claim you might want to take a look at the bag that just continues to spin.
